WATIE WHITE – PAINTINGS
BRENT HOUZENGA – MIXED MEDIA
OPENING RECEPTION FOR THE ARTISTS SATURDAY MARCH 6, 2010, 6 -9pm
Who are these people? That is the common question asked about artists’ Watie White and Brent Houzenga’s current art work.
In White’s “Stolen Paintings” he has his subject play an active role in the development of the work. Each model chooses a masterpiece painting in which they feel a connection toward. White then “steals” the composition of that painting and interweaves the subject’s personal stories into the subject matter. White infuses the paintings with his own whimsy, and sometimes off color humor to create his signature messy painterly palette pieces. By the end of the finished product, the identity of the original painting, the subject and the artist’s view are changed completely.
The process of identification takes a different turn with Brent Houzenga’s found object mixed media work. Houzenga’s plays another kind of interactive role in the identity of his subjects. These found photographs from the late 1800’s were “stolen” from a trash bin along the road where he takes his daily jog. His fascination with these portraits has brought up his own questions about personal identity.
Both of these artists question history, identity and create icons out of common folk. At the same time the viewer has an opportunity to create his/her own stories of who these people are, taking portraiture into the 21st century.

Artists’ Co-op show features three longtime members
OMAHA, Neb. – The Artists’ Cooperative Gallery is showing the work of three longtime members – painter Valerie Light Anderson, potter Thomas Hamilton and painter Jean Mason. Their feature show will run March 3 through March 28, 2010. The artists will host an opening celebration 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, March 6 and will demonstrate their techniques Sunday, March 7 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
In addition, members of Omaha’s Ikebana group will bring their skills in the Japanese art of flower arrangement to the gallery. Members will each choose an artwork in the gallery to inspire a floral design. The arrangements will be on display March 19 through March 21.
As always, events at the Artists’ Cooperative Gallery are free.
Valerie Light Anderson paints landscapes, figures and still lifes. She’s interested in the ways light affects objects, and how capturing that moment conveys a sense of time, place and emotion. “I look for what the light does, revealing some quiet scene, some interplay between objects, textures, shadows, space,” Anderson said. “I like to think of my works as moments, captured just before the light changed and the moment was gone. Sometimes my paintings are more than moments, but quiet little conversations.”
Thomas Hamilton creates ceramics pieces inspired by the outdoors. He developed his own blend of stoneware clay over the last 40 years of studio work. His extensive research led to using multiples glazes to create dynamic pieces that often include references to clouds, wind and water. “The unique properties of clay make it limitless,” Hamilton said. “I can move it easily – push, pull, add or subtract.” He creates wheel-thrown as well as hand-built pieces.
Jean Mason’s energetic paintings feature movement and bright colors. Perhaps best known for her portrayal of musicians, Mason has created new works that are spontaneous, loose and affordable. In these large-scale paintings on canvas pieces, she explores relationships, communication, listening to one’s instincts and the connections to powers beyond us. “They are about having fun, living with joy and intention, connecting and feeling alive,” she said. “The series comes from a scrap of paper on the wall in my studio that says ‘there’s a bold bright spot where my soul wants to be.’ ”
The Artists’ Co-op has been showing the work of respected regional artists for nearly 35 years. This cooperative group of artists conducts educational and cultural outreach activities, and it maintains and staffs a gallery that features works in a wide variety of media, including sculpture, weaving, painting, pottery, photography, printmaking and drawing. Monthly opening receptions provide opportunities to meet member artists and learn more about their work.

Someone once told me, “If you don’t have a dream, make one up. That’s because it’s easier to steer a moving object that one that’s dead in the water.” Which really means if you have a goal, or dream, you have a better chance of realizing it than if you don’t have one. And I think that goes against all we’re led to believe growing up, especially as women.
Most of us are afraid to dream. That’s what my piece for this show is about. For years I was afraid to say the simple words: “I’m an artist!” Never mind that I had five years of art school or that it was all I was ever good at.” For some of us, we feel that declaring the “dream” makes us vulnerable to the loss of it. Truth is, without the declaration we have no path to fulfill it.
It took me years to break loose of all those negative words from the critic in my head and launch my dream. But once I did, the path opened up and the journey began and I’ve never been happier ! My only regret is that I waited so long.
“Any dream will do” is an amazing mantra when you really think about it. What’s yours?

Surrounded by a green field, the Florence Mill Farmers Market is the perfect setting for farm-fresh produce and artisans in an authentic, unique, historical setting. The site is also one of Omaha’s preservation success stories. The atmosphere is rustic and rural.
The museum on the first floor is open for tours. On exhibit in the ArtLoft gallery is a series of black & white photographs by Linda Meigs of a five-generation family farm, affectionately called “The Farm.”
The Florence Mill is a blending of history, art, and agriculture. A farmers market is an ideal way to bring agriculture back to this once obsolete country mill & grain elevator. And just like mills of yore, the Florence Mill is again a place for the community to gather, shop and converse. But instead of grinding the grain, we are picking out farm-fresh produce.
The Florence Mill Farmers Market’s season begins June 6, 2010. The “sleep-in-Sunday” hours are from 11 am to 3 pm, though the building remains open longer. The Mill Museum and ArtLoft close at 5pm.
The historic Florence Mill is located at 9102 North 30th Street (I-680, Exit 13) next to the Mormon Bridge.

"I grew up in the small town of Treynor, Iowa. My first experience with art was watching my mother doodle on a piece of paper on a table at my Grandma’s home. You could say I get my talent from her. Also, throughout high school I had a very good and motivating art teacher." -M. Graham
