Each month, Second Friday’s Downtown showcases the work of local artists and craftsmen, as well as musicians and wine from local vineyards. This month, the free event has a literary spin.

The featured artist of Second Friday’s Downtown’s May event is a local artist who recently published a book. Isabelle Stewart penned “Celtic Rain,” the first in a trio of fiction books. “Celtic Rain” was self-published on Lulu.com, where copies may be purchased. A limited supply of books will be available during Second Fridays. Stewart lives in Council Bluffs but grew up in Treynor.

Second Friday’s will be held this Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at 500 Willow Ave. and 109 Pearl St. The event is open to the public.

May’s Second Friday’s event will feature the work of several artists, some of which will have easels and craft tables set up to do demonstrations. Among the participating artists and craftsmen are Cello Dave, Margaret LaBounty, Curtis Dall, Pat Barton, Mary Mancuso, Joe Gallas, Gerard Pefung, Ronald Larson, Marti Merrill, James Alexander, Dorothy Cox, Ida Neary, Carole Waterman, Michael Sherer, Rob Cerveny, Akoostic Guitar, Ruth Schroader, Lynn Kvigne, Tom Green and Bloom Floral Works. Going with the literary theme, Larry Schulenberg, author of “To Catch the Snow Flakes” and “Willie McGuire and the Land of the People,” will also participate.

Following this Friday’s evening of the arts, Second Friday’s will have a float in the Celebrate CB Parade on Saturday. In keeping with the parade’s theme of “Aspire Higher,” the float portrays the work of artist Jackson Pollack.

According to a press release, the artists behind Second Friday’s are in talks with Channel 17 to produce segments of local artists to be televised at a later date. Organizers are also working on the Second Friday’s Summer Arts Festival, an event showcasing most of the members’ art and crafts at one location.

GET YOURS TODAY!!! Book 1 of Mick & Matt Glebe’s The MITH

The Man In The Hat (MITH) follows a mysterious vigilante on his romanticized quest to locate a beautiful woman that was kidnapped right before his eyes. Set in the late months of 1941, he battles the Chicago crime rallies in hopes to find a lead in his case. In his efforts, he gains the attention of the cities most sexually deviant crime reporter, Idola Amora; who quickly falls for him and his artistic talents. Yet there still remains much skepticism and controversy amongst the local populace—if the MITH stands for good or evil. This lone gunman stalking the Chicago underworld is rendered in a stylish noir crime drama that focuses on cynical attitudes and sexual motivations that drives this tale to its darkest core.

the future of painting

“the future of painting”
By Mike Giron
More to come regarding this exhibit of recent paintings.

Those of you who live nearby are invited to attend the artist’s reception on May 22nd.

Of course, stop by for the Hot Shops Open House, May 1 & 2 – always an exciting event! See you any & each of those days!

A tight umbrella description of this show: it is a peek into the future through the art of the past fused with anxieties of the present and of recent experiences. Not all pretty, but not all downer, either.

As the exhibition statement comes along, it will be posted in the shows/events section. Also, another progress painting to be posted in the portfolio: Courbet’s The Sleepers. A detail of that painting shows here, taken from a prior stage of development.

I would like to add that five of the works from this show were created or begun during a residency stay at Kimmel-Harding-Nelson in Nebraska City. Click on their link at right. It was an excellent experience. I met composers, a writer, documentarians, photographers… really sharp and creative people. We were all very busy being productive and were supported by the wonderful staff there. Thank You!

Now – it’s a wild ride up to the last minute! Some of our students at BU hang their thesis show the same day! It’s interesting and exciting to feel the squeeze together. If you are in a crunch period, know that you are not alone. Keep pushing and take care of yourself. If you are breathing-in Spring in a leisurely way, smell the flowers for us, who on the run in the crazy world of our own making.
