“The Door to Everlasting Happiness”
by Kelly Adams
This series of work is based on the same image. All the work in the show comes from an abstract door that resembles a figure dancing. Each piece shows improvisation from the original and different themes within the confines of this unique symbol.
Opening Reception, Saturday, July 3rd, 2010, 6-9pm
“This is my first solo show. I have been working on a series based on an image I first created 10 years ago. Going back to the work I made for my BFA I have always used doorways or doors as a motif for expectation and curiosity. Although the symbol looks the same in each image, my approach gives each one its own voice. There are smaller themes in groups of three that allow me to go off on a tangent but still refer to the overall theme of attaining happiness. I am very proud of this work and I would love for everyone to enjoy the show! I have also invited Tim Siragusa to share the space with his new work that is a combination of obsessive drawing and watercolor. Some of this new work has been on display in our studio since May.
The show runs July 3 to 30 in the Hallway gallery at the Hot Shops Art Center. For driving directions go to www.hotshopsartcenter.com
The opening reception on July 3 runs from 6 to 9 and will be a great way to kick off your holiday weekend. Refreshments will be served and families are welcome. There are 2 other shows opening the same night as well as the Liquid Arts Fest for home brewers. The Nicholas gallery will host, “Out of the Woods” featuring work made from wood in a variety of processes from handbuilding to turning. The 1301 gallery will host work by Travis Apel, a sculptor who makes beautiful work from bronze and semi-precious stones. All gallery events are free and open to the public.”

Seeing for the first time since childhood…
Paintings by Inna Kulagina
Monday, June 28 – Thursday, August 12, 2010
Kulagina attributes most of her aesthetic awareness to the places she has lived or worked as an artist. These diverse places gave her the opportunity to look at art from the viewpoints of different cultures, in different economies and political systems. She grew up in former Soviet Central Asia which introduced her to artists such as Nicholai Sergeivich Shin and David Alfaro Sequeiros, as well as 19th century Romanticism and art of the early 20th century. Living in Honduras and Germany shaped her fascination with color and how emotions are expressed through varying shades and hues on the canvas. Coming to the United States created a new and different backdrop for the work.

Perhaps more importantly though was the change in the landscape of her family with the birth of her son. Now, Kulagina says that she, “look(s) at the world through a more maternal perspective. My art has become more a mirror of myself, of what is going on within me, the mirror of my love of this world and what discoveries are waiting for me behind each canvas.” Her new work expresses a sense of belongingness and connectivity with loved ones – past, present and future.

O! Guy or Relaxed Dude
-a sculpture by Leslie Bruning, 2010
Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce Courtyard
RELAXED DUDE is a causal portrait of Omaha. In most respects the interaction among the citizens of Omaha and their out-of-town visitors happens causally, over a chance encounter on the street, on the offering of assistance to someone who appears lost, or over a cup of coffee or some other beverage. It is this neighborly quality that most defines us to our visitors as they spend time in Omaha.
We encounter them at cultural events, business conferences, entertainment venues, or at sporting events. Our encounters are by chance and usually one on one.
This sculpture is not a naturalistic portrayal of a young man relaxing after run or jog in the City, but it is an attitudinal portrait of a person at ease. We are aware that once we get to know a person as a person, the surface features of one’s skin and the shape of their body becomes secondary to the values and attitudes that radiate from that person. In my mind, that is a much more revealing and realistic portrait than any careful rendering of the textures and clothing of a well crafted figure.
Structurally, the sculpture is to be constructed of tapered, curving steel light-poles signifying the legs, arms, and torso of the figure. The hands, the four feet long shoes, and the head, complete with a baseball cap with the OJ logo, will be modeled in clay and cast in aluminum. This will give a nice organic feel to the figure. These features will then be powder coated in the selected colors.

"I grew up in the small town of Treynor, Iowa. My first experience with art was watching my mother doodle on a piece of paper on a table at my Grandma’s home. You could say I get my talent from her. Also, throughout high school I had a very good and motivating art teacher." -M. Graham
